Using Art to Identify Literary Technique

Description Project Edvard Munch’s The Scream. Discuss 1st impressions and use the following questions to discuss the painting. How does the color choice affect the mood? Why might Munch have used wavy brush strokes? What do the central figure’s gestures tell us about his feelings? Explain that just like Munch used specific techniques to create a mood and tell a story, authors use literary devices to create a mood and tell a story. Next, read a short story and identify literary devices used in the story.

Learning Objectives
Students will get to experience a discussion on art as well as learn that artists use specific tools and techniques to create a mood or communicate a message. They will also learn that authors are “artists” but their tools are words and literary devices.

Copy of Edvard Munch’s painting “The Scream” List of literary devices Various short stories Other Information I plan on regulary incorporating art discussions into the curriculum to enhance students understanding of specific literary devices such as similes, metaphors, hyperbole, etc.
