Every year for my high school chemistry class, we go over the Scientific Method. The first step is observation. With this easy project I revamped from Current Science Magazine, I try to help students be aware of their surroundings . I have students take a photo of something that is around them everyday but perhaps very close-up or from an artistic angle. I compile a slideshow and have students guess what the images are. It\’s a fun way to get students interested in art and science!
Students will learn about the importance of observation in the field of science and the scientific method. I remind students that it was observation which led to the discovery of penicillin!
Students need a digital camera and access to either e-mail or a USB thumb/flash drive to send the picture to the teacher. Some students (usually those interested in photography) use very simple photoshop type programs to enhance their pictures.
