The Art-Writing Connection

As part of the Illinois Common Core Standards, my 6th graders must use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, and description, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters. I plan to use pictures (photographs, paintings, etc.) to have my students create vivid storylines using their five senses. The artwork will inspire the students to write a story using vivid word choice and dialogue. Those stories will then be the basis for a play acted out for other 6th graders.

Students will be able to use their imagination to write a story from the art work, then create a play from their written story ideas. They will act out the play and videotape it for other 6th grade art classes to view. Each of my 3 classes will be grouped together and writing stories based on the same 7 pieces of artwork.

Other Information

My students are 11-12 years old, and I feel their hunger to learn is insatiable. If I am able to incorporate art and the language arts, the interdisciplinary approach will allow them to see that writing is important across the curriculum. The stronger their written work, the more interesting and viewer-friendly the plays will be that they produce and act out! Thank you for your consideration!
