Using George Ella Lyons poem, “Where I’m From” as a mentor text, students will engage in the writing process to highlight the concrete images from their lives that make up the abstractions of who they are. This activity will allow students to reflect and respond on a subject they know very well: themselves. With the writing complete, the students will proceed by creating their self-portraits in Art class. Self portraits and Poems will be displayed side by side.
Students will develop a clear understanding of the differences between things that are abstract and those that are concrete. They will think, reflect, respond, draft, revise and edit their writing as well as create visual representations of who they are both literally and figuratively.
Student will use paper and pen in addition to Office tools to publish their writing. For the creation of their self-portraits, students will use anything from the more familiar colored pencils and markers, to charcoal.
